FIT Kit Instructions

How to Use the Kit

Ensure that you have the following items:

When you are ready to have a bowel movement (poop), watch this video demonstration or follow the simple instructions below.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Collect the sample

  1. Unfold the collection paper.
  2. Lay the collection paper flat inside your toilet on top of the water. Have a bowel movement on top of the paper.
  3. Twist and lift the cap on the sample bottle and pull out the sample stick. Keep the liquid in the bottle as it is needed for the test.
  4. Poke the bowel movement with the sample stick a few times to cover the grooved tip of the stick.
  5. Push the stick back into the sample bottle until the cap clicks.
  6. Flush the collection paper and remaining bowel movement.

Label your sample

  1. Using a ballpoint pen, fill in the yellow box at the right if no label is attached. The collection date is the date you collected your sample.
  2. If not already filled in, write your full name, medical record number and collection date on the sample container label.

Prepare your package for mailing

  1. Wrap your sample in the small shipping pad.
  2. Put the sample bottle and the pad inside the plastic bag and seal the bag.
  3. Put the sealed bag and folded instruction sheet  in the return prepaid envelope.
  4. Mail the envelope within 48 hours.

How To Get Your Test Results

Your test results will be sent to you. If you have a positive result, you will need a colonoscopy to complete your screening. On average, out of 100 people who do a FIT kit, 5 people have a positive result and need a follow-up colonoscopy.
